What is Dojokun?

Dojokun (道場訓) is the set of guiding principles or moral code practiced in a karate dojo. It is recited at the end of training to remind students that karate is not only about physical skill, but also about character, discipline, and mindset.

In Shotokan Karate—especially within organizations like the Japan Karate Association—the Dojokun serves as the ethical foundation of every karateka.

Why Dojokun Is Important

The Dojokun reminds every student that:

Karate builds character, not just strength
True power comes with self-control
A karateka must be useful to society, not dangerous to it

This is why it is often said:

“Karate begins with respect and ends with respect.”
